Advice for Orange County Residents During High Winds This Weekend

Hello Residents –

With the high winds expected this Labor Day weekend we wanted to provide you with some quick tips.

Stay indoors, secure loose items, and follow official alerts to protect yourself, your home, and your community during the high winds.

Before the Winds Arrive

  • Secure outdoor items: bring in or tie down patio furniture, garden equipment, tents, and any other loose objects that could be blown away
  • Prepare an emergency kit with water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio
  • Charge backup devices and keep your vehicle fueled
  • Sign up for AlertOC.org to receive emergency notifications

During the High Winds

  • Stay indoors and away from windows; if you must be outside, stay close to sturdy structures and avoid elevated areas like roofs
  • Stay off roads when possible; treat intersections as four-way stops if traffic signals lose power
  • Watch for flying debris such as branches and signs
  • If you see a downed power line, stay at least 100 feet away, never touch it, and call 911 immediately
  • If driving, keep both hands on the wheel, slow down, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid high-profile vehicles or trailers

Reminder: Conditions can shift quickly, so please monitor local weather updates and official channels for the latest information.
